EHCP & SEND Support

At Lighthouse Tuition South-West, we provide personalised educational support for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We understand that every child learns differently, and our approach is centred around creating safe, supportive and flexible learning experiences that allow children to build confidence, engagement and progress at their own pace.

We work closely with families, schools and professionals to ensure that support is tailored to the individual needs of each child. Whether a child already has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), is currently on SEN Support, awaiting assessment, or simply struggling within mainstream education, our tutors aim to provide understanding, consistency and specialist educational support that genuinely meets the child where they are.

What is an EHCP?

An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legal document designed to support children and young people whose additional needs require more support than is typically available through standard SEN provision. EHCPs identify a child’s educational, developmental, social, emotional or physical needs and outline the provision required to help them access education and make progress.

An EHCP can include support relating to areas such as communication, cognition and learning, sensory processing, emotional wellbeing, physical needs, social interaction and independence skills. The plan is created collaboratively between professionals, parents/carers and the young person themselves, with agreed outcomes and recommendations for support.

For many families, navigating the EHCP process can feel overwhelming and emotionally exhausting. We understand the challenges that can come with repeatedly explaining your child’s needs and advocating for appropriate support. Our aim is to provide calm, informed and compassionate educational support alongside the wider professional network surrounding your child.

Why Can an EHCP Be Important?

An EHCP can play an important role in ensuring that a child’s needs are properly recognised, understood and supported. It helps create accountability around the provision a child requires and encourages joined-up working between education, health and care professionals.

For some children, an EHCP can provide access to specialist support, therapies, alternative provision or educational adjustments that may otherwise be difficult to secure. It can also help families and professionals work towards clear and meaningful outcomes that are personalised to the child’s strengths, needs and future goals.

Most importantly, an EHCP acknowledges that some children require a different approach to learning and development in order to thrive. Every child deserves support that reflects how they learn best, rather than simply what is expected for their age.

Our SEND & EHCP Support

Our tutors provide tailored educational support that is adapted to each child’s individual profile, learning style and emotional needs. We recognise that progress is not always linear and that for many children, building trust, confidence and emotional safety is the foundation for meaningful learning.

We support children and young people with a wide range of needs, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, speech and language difficulties, sensory processing differences, SEMH needs, emotionally based school avoidance, anxiety and executive functioning difficulties. Our support is informed by knowledge of developmental and cognitive differences and a strong understanding of the barriers many neurodivergent children experience within traditional educational environments.

Sessions are personalised and flexible, allowing tutors to adapt pacing, communication styles and learning approaches to suit the individual child. We aim to create an environment where children feel understood, respected and able to engage without fear of failure or pressure.

Working Collaboratively Around the Child

We believe that the best outcomes happen when everyone supporting a child works together with consistency, communication and understanding. Our tutors regularly work alongside parents and carers, schools, SENCOs, local authorities and external professionals to ensure that support remains joined-up and child-centred.

Where appropriate, we can contribute educational observations, progress updates and professional communication to support wider planning around the child. We understand the importance of recognising not only academic progress, but also areas such as confidence, emotional regulation, communication, engagement and independence.

By building positive relationships with both families and professionals, we aim to create a supportive network around the child that encourages long-term progress and wellbeing.

Observations, Reports & EHCP Support

As part of our provision, our tutors make ongoing educational observations linked to the child’s needs, engagement and development. These observations can help identify patterns, barriers to learning, strengths and areas where additional support may be beneficial.

Where appropriate, we can provide supporting letters, educational summaries and written observations that may assist families during EHCP assessments, annual reviews or professional meetings. We may also support discussions around expected outcomes, suitable provision and the educational approaches that appear most effective for the child.

We understand that families are often required to gather evidence and repeatedly explain their child’s experiences. Our aim is to help reduce some of that pressure by providing informed, professional educational input that contributes to a clearer picture of the child’s needs and progress over time.

At Lighthouse Tuition South-West, we take a child-centred, strengths-based and neuroaffirming approach to learning. We recognise that children often learn best when they feel emotionally safe, understood and genuinely supported.

We aim to reduce pressure wherever possible and focus on building positive relationships, confidence and trust alongside educational progress. For some children, success may initially look like re-engaging with learning, feeling comfortable in sessions, communicating more openly or developing self-belief again.

Every child’s journey is different, and we are committed to meeting children with patience, flexibility and compassion while helping them move towards meaningful and realistic outcomes.
