Founder of Lighthouse Tuition South-West

Hi, I’m Sophie, the founder of Lighthouse Tuition and a qualified primary teacher with a background in dance, community work and SEND support.

I started my career in community dance, which took me all over the world using movement to empower young people. After retraining as a teacher, I worked in both mainstream and specialist schools, where I found my true passion: supporting children who learn differently.

Now, through Lighthouse Tuition, I get to offer creative, personalised support that helps children build confidence in a way that works for them. My sessions are playful, flexible, and always centred around the individual child.

When I’m not tutoring, I’m usually out in nature, pottering about in my campervan, or enjoying a cuppa with my dog at my feet!

Tyler

GCSE Tutor at Lighthouse Tuition South-West

Hello, I'm Tyler!
I specialise in working with Lighthouse's older students and supporting them with their GCSE English qualifications. I tutor for both the Literature and the Literature and Language papers. I have taught secondary ages for most of my career in Exeter and Plymouth. I previously worked as a Head of English, and as Lead Coach for English teaching school wide. I am a bit of a self-confessed geek - I currently work as a digital learning designer and create courses for learners.

I spend my summers examining and so know the very best way for our students to gain the most marks. I am very much a linear thinker, which is unusual for an English expert (or so you'd think!) So, my favourite part of my job is showing other linear-thinkers smart, genuinely interesting ways to gain marks with ease and fully understand what the exam is asking them for. Sophie says I am dry humoured and passionate (but I hate describing myself... you'll have to make up your own mind!)

In my spare time, I love attending gigs and you can find me watching live music most weekends, climbing or sea swimming.  I have two fur children (cats named Bernard and Winston) whom I love more than anyone else in my household... Just don't tell my fiance!

Emily

Tutor at Lighthouse Tuition South-West

Hello there! I’m Emily! I’m a primary school teacher of 11 years and have taught from EYFS-Year 4 in mainstream and specialist settings. I have a passion for helping children with SEND achieve, and ensuring I am a fully inclusive teacher! I have my SENCO qualification and am always looking for ways to learn more about SEND! My lessons in school and my tutoring sessions are playful and designed to tap into the child’s interests and to develop a play based approach to my sessions. Every child learns differently and at a different pace so lessons need to be unique and tailored to meet the child’s needs.

I have recently published my first children’s book (second one is in production!)  and I have loved visiting schools showing them that the children can do what they dream! I love challenging myself and have completed the London marathon in recent years. I want my own children to look up to Mummy and know they can do what they put their mind to. Children are at the heart of everything I do and my aim is to make a positive difference to little lives.

Hello, I'm Chris! I’m really excited to be offering tutoring and I want my lessons to be as fun, interactive and playful as possible. Over my decade of teaching I’ve been privileged to have seen so many amazing children flourish their needs are met and they are in the right environment. My goal is to create a space where every child feels safe, motivated, entertained and happy.

Outside of teaching you’ll usually find me enjoying sport, especially football. I’m a big Manchester United fan and I’m still hoping to see them lift the Premier League trophy again in my lifetime. I also love going to the cinema, reading, listening to music and hiking (especially if there’s a cosy village pub waiting at the end!)

At home I share my life with two very cuddly cats, Nox and Lumos, who spend most of their days sleeping, eating and being cute.

Hi, I’m Fi, since starting school myself, I always wanted to become a primary school teacher and graduated from Rolle College in Exmouth (many years ago…).  I have taught from EYFS to Y4 and have a real passion for early learning, especially finding active, fun and engaging ways to support and develop confidence with phonics, early reading, writing and number skills.

I love the coast and, in my spare time, you’ll often find me on the South West Coast Path.  If I’m near to the beach, I must always at least dip my toes in the water!  I spend a lot of time on Dartmoor, which we are so lucky to have on our doorstep, and go Letterboxing with my family.  We have collected over 3000 stamps.

I also love an adventure, whether going on a waterslide, roller-coaster or giving abseiling or parasailing a go.  I go to Pilates twice a week and enjoy a fun game of badminton, which is lucky as I also like baking, and tasting the goods… just to make sure they are suitable for others, of course!

Tutor at Lighthouse Tuition South-West

Hello, I’m Beth! I have over 15 years of experience working in a variety of education settings, including more than 11 years as a qualified primary school teacher. Although I’ve taught across the full primary age range, my greatest strengths and passions lie in Early Years and Key Stage 1. I love supporting children as they develop early reading and number skills, and I believe strongly in the power of learning through play. I have extensive experience supporting SEND learners, including children with speech, language and communication needs. I’m confident in using Makaton and incorporate this into my sessions to support learning and communication.  I’m committed to tailoring every session to meet the individual needs of each child and helping them feel confident, supported and able to thrive.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy walking our lovely dog along our local beaches. I also love to craft and usually have some sort of project on the go!

Hi, I'm Vic! I have been a primary school teacher for 15 years, and I’m absolutely delighted to be part of the Lighthouse Tuition team.

Over my career, I’ve had the privilege of teaching across Plymouth and Torquay, as well as spending time working in a school in Lapland! I know that every child is unique, and I love tailoring my lessons to spark curiosity, build confidence, and make learning an enjoyable journey.

Whether your child needs a boost in a specific subject or wants to stretch their skills further, I am here to support them every step of the way. When I am not teaching, you can usually find me out in nature with my two energetic boys, wild swimming at the beach, or relaxing in the garden with my chickens!
